CHINESE THERAPEUTIC ACTIONS

DRUG-HERB INTERACTIONS

* Proscar (finasteride) / 5-alpha reductase inhibitors: Finasteride requires 3 months or more of continuous use before clinical benefit is seen. Known side effects include sexual dysfunction, impotence, decreased libido, and decreased ejaculate volume. P-Support may be used concurrently to address urinary symptoms during the latency period or as a standalone alternative for mild to moderate BPH.

* Minipress (prazosin) / alpha-adrenergic blockers: Alpha-blockers relax smooth muscle in the prostate and bladder neck to improve urinary flow but carry risks of orthostatic hypotension, dizziness, lightheadedness, syncope, and rebound hypertension upon discontinuation. P-Support herbs (Huang Bo, Huang Qi) also relax prostatic smooth muscle via damp-heat clearance and qi regulation — use cautiously in combination with alpha-blockers and monitor blood pressure.
