Astringent Complex™

Adjunct formula for acute and chronic inflammation with swelling, redness, heat, pus, abscess, and damp-heat accumulation

⚠️ Use with caution if infection is involved — sour/binding properties may cause retention of pathogenic factors if used alone. Add Herbal ABX (bacterial) or Herbal AVR (viral) for infection. Contraindicated during pregnancy and nursing. Designed by Dr. Jimmy Wei-Yen Chang.

CLINICAL APPLICATIONS

* Swelling and inflammation — acute or chronic; with or without redness, heat sensation, and/or pain

* All excess heat (acute) and deficiency heat (chronic) conditions: fire, heat, damp-heat, or toxic heat

* Any swelling, exudate, fluids, pus, abscess, boils, or sores from damp accumulation as a result of inflammation

* Conditions including: arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, bursitis, tendonitis, trauma, Crohn’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease, hemorrhoids, pelvic inflammatory disease, prostatitis, asthma, autoimmune diseases, sinusitis, vasculitis, lupus, colitis, proctitis, psoriasis, atherosclerosis, nephritis, myocarditis

Key herb-level clinical data:

— Ce Bai Ye: suppresses TNF-α, IL-6, and COX-2

— Ma Chi Xian (Portulaca): analgesic and anti-inflammatory comparable to diclofenac sodium (Voltaren)

— Ma Chi Xian + Mang Xiao topical paste: 93% effective rate in 128 patients within 3–7 days

— He Zi (Terminalia chebula): antihistamine and anti-anaphylactic; inhibits mast cell histamine release; prevents systemic and local anaphylaxis

— He Zi: disease-modifying for rheumatoid arthritis — reduces serum TNF-α, TNF-R1, IL-6, and IL-1β

— Chebulagic acid (from He Zi): COX and 5-lipoxygenase dual inhibitor; suppresses collagen-induced arthritis

— Tian Hua Fen: trichosanthin delays allograft rejection via reduced IL-2 and interferon-gamma + increased IL-4 and IL-10

Case results:

— Sea urchin sting (59M): completely healed after 15 days of Flex (NP) + Astringent Complex + acupuncture

— Proctitis (50F, 2-year history): GI Care + Astringent Complex 50:50 — symptoms gone after 3 bottles; no return after 4 months; medical tests negative

WESTERN THERAPEUTIC ACTIONS

* Anti-inflammatory — Ce Bai Ye (TNF-α, IL-6, COX-2 suppression); Ma Chi Xian (Voltaren-comparable); He Zi (chebulagic acid COX + 5-LOX dual inhibition); Tian Hua Fen (trichosanthin immunoregulatory)

* Cytokine suppression — TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-R1; modulates IL-2, interferon-gamma, IL-4, IL-10

* Antioxidant — fixes free-radical-mediated peroxidation of membrane lipids and oxidative damage of DNA and proteins

* Antihistamine / anti-anaphylactic — He Zi inhibits mast cell histamine release; prevents systemic and local anaphylaxis

* Astringent / binding — Wu Bei Zi + He Zi shrink inflamed and expanded tissue; prevent drying of yin from heat in chronic inflammation

CHINESE THERAPEUTIC ACTIONS

* Clears fire, damp-heat, toxic heat, and deficiency heat

* Reduces swelling and redness

* Cools the blood

* Generates body fluids — Tian Hua Fen (essential for tissue growth and yin restoration)

DOSAGE

Standard: 2 to 4 capsules three times daily on an empty stomach with warm water.

Severe cases: Up to 6 to 8 capsules three times daily.

Note: Take with meals for sensitive digestive systems. Most effective combined with a primary formula at a 1:2 or 1:1 ratio.

Diet: Eat fresh fruits and vegetables, mushrooms, whole grains, organic produce. Increase berries (blueberries, strawberries). Increase cooling foods: yams, radishes, carrots, melons, cucumbers, beets. Drink green or oolong tea. Avoid spicy/fried/greasy foods, sugar, alcohol, coffee, processed meats, and pungent aromatics (garlic, onions, chili, wasabi).

Lifestyle: Avoid drinking, smoking, staying up late, and stress — all contribute to heat.
