Gentiana Complex™

TCM herbal formula for excess-type hypertension with anger and flushed face; genital herpes and herpes zoster; UTI, yeast infection, acute cystitis, urethritis, and vaginal infection; acute icteric hepatitis and cholecystitis — antihypertensive; antibiotic; antibacterial; antiviral; antifungal; hepatoprotective; cholagogic; anti-inflammatory; drains fire from Liver and Gallbladder channels; clears damp-heat from the lower jiao; nourishes yin

⚠️ Contraindicated during pregnancy and nursing. Herbal treatment is ineffective for malignant hypertension and some secondary hypertension (renal stenosis, pheochromocytoma) — refer to a physician. For infections: take for approximately 1–2 weeks only — not for long-term or prophylactic use. Once infection subsides, transition to Nourish for maintenance. Contains Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) — California Prop 65 warning: "This product contains Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei). Read and follow directions carefully. Do not use if you have or develop diarrhea, loose stools, or abdominal pain because Da Huang may worsen these conditions and be harmful to your health. Consult your physician if you have frequent diarrhea or if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition." Contains Dan Shen (Radix et Rhizoma Salviae Miltiorrhizae) — patients on anticoagulant or antiplatelet therapies such as Coumadin (warfarin) should use with caution or not at all. Some patients may experience mild stomach discomfort or loose stools — reduce dosage or take with food. Monitor blood pressure and adjust dosage based on age, body weight, severity, and response to treatment.

Clinical distinction — Gentiana Complex vs. V-Support: Both treat damp-heat in the lower jiao. Gentiana Complex has a broader effect along the Liver and Gallbladder channels from the head to the genital area, and also treats hypertension. V-Support has a localized effect on the genital area. Use Gentiana Complex when the patient has both hypertension (Liver yang rising) and damp-heat in the lower jiao. Use V-Support when blood pressure is normal or low. For vaginitis: viral vaginitis → Gentiana Complex; bacterial vaginitis → V-Support.

Topical application for genital herpes: Break open capsules and apply powder directly onto the lesion, or mix with water to make a paste and apply to lesions.

CLINICAL APPLICATIONS

* Hypertension (excess-type) with anger, flushed face, dizziness, and throbbing headache

* Viral infection — genital herpes, herpes zoster

* Bacterial or fungal infections — UTI, vaginal infection, yeast infection, herpes infection, boils, carbuncles, acute cystitis, urethritis, and related discomforts or dysfunctions

* Liver and gallbladder disorders — acute icteric hepatitis, acute cholecystitis

Background: From TCM perspectives, fire in the Liver and Gallbladder channels is characterized by headache, red eyes, hypochondriac pain, bitter taste in the mouth, deafness, and swollen or painful inner ears. Damp-heat in the lower jiao manifests with swelling and itching of the external genitalia, sweating in the groin, dysuria, turbid urine, and yellow foul-smelling leukorrhea in women. From Western perspectives, these conditions correspond to hypertension, genitourinary infections, and liver/gallbladder disorders. Multiple herbs in a formula increase antibiotic effect more than tenfold vs. single ingredients, and reduce the risk of bacterial and viral resistance and mutation.

Avoid smoking, alcohol, spicy foods, coffee, caffeine, stimulants, fatty or fried foods, salty foods, stress, constipation, potatoes, strong emotions, pork, and overeating.

Nutrition — Cystitis: Increase cranberry or cranberry juice intake — produces hippuric acid in urine that inhibits bacterial growth and prevents bacteria from adhering to bladder lining. Avoid juices with high-fructose syrup, sugar, or sweeteners. Drink plenty of fluids to flush bacteria from the bladder. Women: empty bladder before and after intercourse; wash genitalia thoroughly. Tao of Nutrition recommendations: watermelon, pears, carrots, celery, corn, mung beans, corn silk, squash, wheat, water chestnuts, barley, red beans, millet, oranges, cantaloupe, grapes, strawberries, lotus roots, loquats, and plenty of water. Lifestyle: Weight loss recommended to lower blood pressure. Maintain normal bowel and urinary functions. Maintain a positive attitude; control emotions and reduce stress. Stop alcohol and cigarette smoking. Swimming and brisk walking are excellent for hypertension. Meditation, tai chi chuan, and yoga reduce stress and lower blood pressure. For herpes: avoid heat, over-exertion, stress, spicy and greasy foods, alcohol, and coffee — anything that may trigger an attack. Keep infected area clean and dry; abstain from sex during outbreak. Avoid cortisone or petroleum jelly ointments on genital sores — oil-based products reduce air flow and slow healing; cortisone inhibits the immune system and can encourage viral growth. Use cotton underwear instead of nylon to promote air circulation. Wipe front to back after bowel movements to avoid infection. Strengthening the immune system is key to preventing future herpes attacks. For leukorrhea: include yogurt and sour products in the diet.
