Flex (MLT) – TCM Herbal Formula for Muscle Atrophy, Tendon & Ligament Degeneration, Cartilage Damage & Chronic Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation
Flex (MLT)™
TCM herbal formula for chronic and mid-to-late stage musculoskeletal rehabilitation — muscle atrophy and wasting; tendon, ligament, and cartilage degeneration; decreased joint mobility; soft tissue recovery — chondroprotective; osteogenic; antiosteoporotic; neuroregenerative; adaptogenic; analgesic; anti-inflammatory; muscle relaxant; tonifies qi and blood; nourishes yin; dispels wind-damp; strengthens muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones
⚠️ Do NOT take during the acute phases of injuries with bleeding and bruises — this formula contains tonic and warm herbs that may worsen acute conditions. Use during mid-to-late stages of recovery and rehabilitation only. Cold packs for the first 24–48 hours of acute injuries to reduce swelling and inflammation; hot packs for chronic injuries to promote blood circulation and enhance healing. Contains Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) — patients on anticoagulant or antiplatelet therapies such as Coumadin (warfarin) should use with caution or not at all. Contains Zhi He Shou Wu (Radix Polygoni Multiflori Praeparata) — prepared (Zhi) form only; safe and well-tolerated due to Maillard reaction processing with Hei Dou (Semen Sojae). Do NOT use He Shou Wu in either prepared or unprepared forms in patients with pre-existing liver disease or liver disease risk factors.
CLINICAL APPLICATIONS
* Atrophy and wasting of muscles, ligaments, and tendons
* Cartilage damage from chronic wear and tear
* Decreased range of motion and mobility of the joints
* Rehabilitation from chronic or late-stage musculoskeletal injuries
* Prevention against wear and tear or breakdown of cartilage and soft tissue surrounding joints
* Individuals engaging in repetitive motions who wish to maintain healthy joints and connective tissue
Background: Musculoskeletal and connective tissue injuries lead to over 10 million clinic visits per year in the United States. Causes may be external (sports injuries, car accidents, trauma), internal (chronic wear and tear; osteoporosis-weakened bones), or both. Acute injuries are characterized by severe pain, swelling, inflammation, and sometimes internal bleeding — treatment focuses on relieving pain, reducing swelling, and stopping bleeding. Chronic injuries are characterized by dull pain, stiffness, numbness, and decreased muscle mass and strength — treatment focuses on pain relief and restoration of physical and physiological functions. After acute injuries (broken bones, fractures, tears of muscles, tendons, or ligaments), extended rest often leads to soft tissue atrophy, decreased joint mobility, and generalized weakness — Flex (MLT) is designed specifically to address this condition.
TCM differentiation: Chronic musculoskeletal injuries are characterized by deficiency of qi, blood, and yin with wind-damp obstruction. Healthy joints depend on healthy surrounding cartilage and soft tissue. Because cartilage has no blood supply, it receives nutrition and oxygen from surrounding joint fluids — adequate blood supply to the surrounding areas ensures a healthy joint. Treatment focuses on tonifying blood, activating blood circulation, nourishing yin, and dispelling wind-damp to facilitate healing and recovery.
Post-surgical recovery protocol: Take Flex (TMX) after surgery for 5–10 days to facilitate immediate wound healing. Continue with Flex (MLT) + Osteo 8 for 1–3 months to facilitate healing and recovery of soft tissues and bones, respectively.
Key herb-level clinical data:
— Chuan Niu Xi (Radix Cyathulae / Cyathula Root): tonifies Liver and Kidney; strengthens tendons and bones; chondroprotective — inhibits induction of MMP-13 (key enzyme for cartilage collagen matrix degradation, especially under arthritic conditions); by down-regulating MMP-13 activity, shows great chondroprotection against cartilage-degrading disorders; helps Dang Gui move blood; stimulates soft tissue (tendons, ligaments, cartilage) growth and restoration; yin tonic — prevents narrowing of joint space (vertebrae, knee) due to degeneration
— Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis / Angelica Sinensis / Dong Quai): tonifies blood; promotes blood circulation to generate new tissues; osteogenic — water extract directly stimulates proliferation, alkaline phosphatase activity, protein secretion, and type I collagen synthesis of human osteoprecursor cells in a dose-dependent manner; marked stimulatory effect on osteoblast proliferation and differentiation; enhances deposition of hyaluronic acid and bone regeneration in vitro; analgesic and anti-inflammatory — potency similar to or stronger than acetylsalicylic acid; caution with anticoagulants
— Xu Duan (Radix Dipsaci / Teasel Root / Dipsacus): dispels wind-damp; strengthens bones and tendons; relieves pain; significant osteogenic and antiosteoporotic properties — increases proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts without affecting osteoclast activity; effectively increases rate of tissue regeneration of damaged bones
— Dang Shen (Radix Codonopsis / Codonopsis / Dang Shen): tonifies qi; neuroregenerative — promotes neuron regeneration in a dose-dependent manner (activates IGF-I and FGF-2 pathways in Schwann cells); adaptogenic — regulatory effect on the CNS to help with adaptation to various stressful environments during rehabilitation
— Wu Jia Pi (Cortex Acanthopanacis / Acanthopanax / Siberian Ginseng Bark): dispels wind-damp; strengthens bones and tendons; relieves pain; analgesic and anti-inflammatory — duration of action up to 5 hours; adaptogenic — enhances physical adaptation by increasing endurance and performance
— Bai Shao (Radix Paeoniae Alba / White Peony Root): nourishes blood and yin; anti-inflammatory and antipyretic — reduces inflammation, swelling, and burning sensations; muscle relaxant — excellent effect to relieve spasms, cramps, and muscle stiffness in both smooth and skeletal muscles; yin tonic — prevents narrowing of joint space due to degeneration
— Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae / Rehmannia): nourishes blood and yin; anti-inflammatory and antipyretic — reduces inflammation, swelling, and burning sensations
— Zhi He Shou Wu (Radix Polygoni Multiflori Praeparata / Prepared Fo-Ti / Prepared Polygonum): tonifies Liver and Kidney; strengthens muscles, tendons, cartilage, and ligaments; yin tonic — prevents narrowing of joint space due to degeneration; prepared (Zhi) form only — safe and well-tolerated; do not use in patients with liver disease risk
— Chu Shi Zi (Fructus Broussonetiae / Broussonetia Fruit / Paper Mulberry Fruit): tonifies Liver and Kidney; strengthens muscles, ligaments, and tendons (traditional use)
— Qian Nian Jian (Rhizoma Homalomenae / Homalomena Rhizome): dispels wind-damp; strengthens muscles, ligaments, and tendons (traditional use)
