Overview

Flex (MLT) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula traditionally used to help support long-term recovery and comfort in muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints during the mid-to-late stages of rehabilitation. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, chronic musculoskeletal discomfort is traditionally associated with deficiency of qi, blood, and yin combined with wind-damp obstruction. This traditional framework is not a medical diagnosis, and any diagnosed musculoskeletal condition should be evaluated and managed by a qualified healthcare professional.

⚠️ Important: Not intended for the acute phase of an injury involving bleeding or bruising — this formula contains warming, tonifying herbs best suited to later-stage recovery. Contains Dang Gui; use with caution or avoid alongside anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications. Contains prepared (Zhi) He Shou Wu; do not use if you have or are at risk for liver disease.

Clinical Applications & Benefits

Flex (MLT) is traditionally used to help support:

  • Comfort and recovery during the later stages of musculoskeletal rehabilitation
  • Healthy muscle tone following a period of reduced activity
  • General joint comfort and mobility
  • Overall tissue nourishment alongside a supervised recovery or rehabilitation plan

People working through longer-term musculoskeletal recovery traditionally turn to formulas like this one to help support the body's natural rebuilding process, always alongside guidance from a healthcare professional or physical therapist.

Key Herbs (TCM Data)

— Chuan Niu Xi (Cyathula Root): traditionally used to tonify the Liver and Kidney and strengthen the tendons and bones, supporting healthy joint tissue.

— Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis): traditionally used to tonify blood and promote healthy circulation to support tissue nourishment; use with caution alongside anticoagulant medications.

— Xu Duan (Teasel Root): traditionally used to dispel wind-damp and strengthen the bones and tendons.

— Dang Shen (Codonopsis): traditionally used to tonify qi and support the body's overall resilience during recovery.

— Wu Jia Pi (Siberian Ginseng Bark): traditionally used to dispel wind-damp, strengthen bones and tendons, and support comfort.

— Bai Shao (White Peony Root) and Di Huang (Rehmannia): traditionally used to nourish blood and yin and support comfort.

— Zhi He Shou Wu (Prepared Fo-Ti): traditionally used to tonify the Liver and Kidney and strengthen muscles, tendons, and ligaments; prepared form only, generally well tolerated; not for use with pre-existing liver disease or risk factors.

— Chu Shi Zi (Broussonetia Fruit) and Qian Nian Jian (Homalomena Rhizome): traditionally used to strengthen muscles, ligaments, and tendons.

Safety & Contraindications

  1. Not intended for the acute phase of an injury with bleeding or bruising; best suited to mid-to-late stage recovery.
  2. Contains Dang Gui; use with caution or avoid alongside warfarin (Coumadin) or other anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications due to increased bleeding risk.
  3. Contains prepared (Zhi) He Shou Wu; do not use if you have pre-existing liver disease or risk factors for liver disease.
  4. Any diagnosed musculoskeletal condition, ongoing pain, or reduced mobility should be evaluated and managed by a qualified healthcare professional.

Dosage & Directions

Standard dosage: 4–6 capsules three times daily, used during the mid-to-late stages of recovery. Not intended for the acute phase of an injury with bleeding or bruising.

Recovery sequence: Some people traditionally use Flex (TMX) during the first phase of physical recovery, then transition to Flex (MLT) alongside Osteo 8 for continued, longer-term support, always under the guidance of a healthcare professional.

Supplementary formulas: For chronic neck and shoulder discomfort, this formula is traditionally paired with Neck & Shoulder (CR). For chronic lower back discomfort, it is traditionally paired with Back Support (CR). For general weakness and fatigue during recovery, it is traditionally paired with Imperial Tonic.

Holistic Nutrition & Lifestyle

Nutrition: Foods traditionally associated with joint and connective tissue support, such as sea cucumber and gelatin, are traditionally recommended, along with a balanced intake of vitamins and minerals to support healthy bones. Glucosamine and chondroitin are also commonly used to help support connective tissue health.

Lifestyle: While rest is important during recovery, gentle movement and light exercise are traditionally encouraged to help support healthy circulation and prevent excessive muscle deconditioning, always within limits set by a healthcare professional.

Case Studies

The following reflect individual practitioner experiences and traditional use; results vary and are not guarantees of outcome for any individual.

"K.L., a 42-year-old man, experienced hip and leg discomfort with reduced mobility, consistent with a painful obstruction pattern with blood deficiency and stagnation. After combining Flex (MLT) with Knee & Ankle (CR) and acupuncture over two months, he reported regaining full use of his leg and returning to regular activity, including cycling."
"M.K., a 39-year-old woman, experienced lingering ankle discomfort following a period of physical strain, consistent with a qi and dampness pattern. After a course of Flex (MLT), she reported the discomfort had eased and she was able to stand comfortably for longer periods."
"B.B., a 62-year-old woman, experienced lower back and leg discomfort with muscle tightness, consistent with a qi and blood stagnation pattern with Liver and Kidney yin deficiency. After adding Flex (MLT) to her acupuncture routine, she reported her legs felt noticeably looser and more comfortable."
