Overview
Back Support (AC) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula traditionally used to help ease acute back discomfort and muscle tightness, including from sports activity, overexertion, or sudden strain. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, sudden back pain and muscle spasms are traditionally associated with qi and blood stagnation in the channels. Back Support (AC) is formulated to help disperse this stagnation, support healthy circulation, and open the channels.
⚠️ Seek immediate medical care if fever accompanies one-sided back pain, or if you experience pain radiating to the extremities along with sudden loss of bladder or bowel control — these can indicate a serious underlying condition requiring emergency evaluation.
Clinical Applications & Benefits
Back Support (AC) is traditionally used to help support:
- Comfort during sudden or acute low back discomfort
- Recovery support after intense sports activity, sudden physical overexertion, or temporary structural strain
- Comfort for back tightness from repetitive movement or physically demanding work
- Traditional support during a flare-up of longer-standing back tightness
People dealing with sudden back tightness, muscle spasms, or occasional low back discomfort from overuse traditionally turn to formulas like this one to help support natural recovery and comfortable movement.
Key Herbs (TCM Data)

Safety & Contraindications
- Not recommended during pregnancy or nursing, as this formula has a blood-invigorating nature.
- Not intended for long-term use; if discomfort becomes ongoing, transition to a formula designed for longer-term support such as Back Support (CR).
- If fever accompanies one-sided back pain, or pain radiates to the extremities with sudden loss of bladder or bowel control, seek immediate medical evaluation — do not rely on this formula for these symptoms.
- As with any herbal supplement, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, especially alongside other medications.
Dosage & Directions
Standard dosage: 3–4 capsules three times daily as needed, taken on an empty stomach with two tall glasses of warm water. For more intense acute discomfort, 6–8 capsules every 4–6 hours, especially in the early stages, reducing back to 3–4 capsules three times daily as discomfort eases.
Clinical notes: For longer-standing back tightness with a recent flare-up, this formula is traditionally used for 1–2 weeks before transitioning to Back Support (CR) for ongoing support. It's traditionally taken before acupuncture or tui-na sessions to help support comfort during treatment.
Supplementary formulas: For traumatic injuries with bruising, this formula is traditionally paired with Flex (TMX). For advanced localized comfort and channel circulation, it is traditionally paired with Herbal ANG. For specialized radiating channel support, it is traditionally paired with Back Support (HD).
Holistic Nutrition & Lifestyle
Nutrition: A varied diet of raw vegetables, fruits, and whole grains is traditionally recommended to help support healthy bones, nerves, and muscles. Adequate calcium is traditionally recommended for healthy connective tissue. Fresh pineapple is traditionally valued for its natural bromelain content. Foods rich in potassium, such as bananas and oranges, along with adequate warm water, are traditionally recommended to help ease muscle tightness. Reducing red meat, seafood, cold beverages, caffeine, sugar, and dairy is also traditionally recommended.
Lifestyle: Using the legs rather than the back when lifting, keeping the back covered and protected from wind exposure, and regular gentle stretching are traditionally recommended. Mild regular exercise such as swimming, yoga, or tai chi is traditionally encouraged. Maintaining good posture while sitting, taking regular breaks, and ensuring proper sleep support with a firm mattress are also traditionally recommended. A warm bath with Ai Ye (mugwort) or Epsom salt for 15–30 minutes is traditionally used to help relax muscles and support healthy circulation.
Case Studies
The following reflect individual practitioner experiences and traditional use; results vary and are not guarantees of outcome for any individual.
"N.I., age 34, experienced muscle spasms and tightness in the lower back with difficulty moving or bending, consistent with a Kidney yin deficiency pattern. Within one day of starting Back Support (AC), discomfort lessened and mobility improved; by day three, she felt back to normal."
"L.S., a 27-year-old electrician, experienced severe lower back tightness after bending at work, consistent with a Liver yin deficiency pattern. After combining Back Support (AC) with a complementary formula, he reported complete recovery within one week, with discomfort easing steadily throughout."
"B.B., age 54, experienced longstanding muscular stiffness and tightness in the lower back, consistent with a qi and blood stagnation pattern. After four weeks on Back Support (AC), she reported a significant reduction in stiffness and was able to stand and remain active for extended periods, which had previously been difficult."
"A 29-year-old dealer experienced acute low back discomfort after a fall, with local swelling and limited movement, consistent with a qi and blood stagnation pattern. Discomfort eased the same day he began Back Support (AC), fully resolved within one week, and full range of motion returned within four days."
