Astringent Complex™

TCM adjunct formula for acute and chronic inflammation with swelling — anti-inflammatory; suppresses pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, COX-2); antioxidant; antihistamine; anti-anaphylactic; clears fire, damp-heat, toxic heat, and deficiency heat; reduces swelling and redness; cools the blood

⚠️ Rarely used alone — designed as a supplementary formula to be taken with a primary formula addressing the cause of inflammation. Use with caution if infection is involved: the sour and binding properties of herbs in this formula may cause retention of pathogenic factors if used alone — add Herbal ABX (bacterial) or Herbal AVR (viral) concurrently. Contraindicated during pregnancy and nursing. If taken with another formula, maintain dosage ratio at 1:2 or 1:1 respectively.

CLINICAL APPLICATIONS

* Swelling and inflammation: acute or chronic, with or without redness, heat sensation, and/or pain

* All excess heat (acute) and deficiency heat (chronic) conditions presenting with fire, heat, damp-heat, or toxic heat

* Any swelling, exudate, fluids, pus, or abscess from water or damp accumulation as a result of inflammation

Background: Inflammation is a complex biological response that protects the host organism from harmful stimuli such as infections or irritations. Acute inflammation is the initial response — increased blood perfusion causes localized redness and heat; blood vessels become more permeable, allowing immune cells to enter affected areas; macrophages and neutrophils engulf micro-organisms; oxidative chemicals kill pathogens. In allergic reactions, pre-sensitized mast cells degranulate and release histamines, triggering blood vessel dilation, pro-inflammatory molecule production, and leukocyte recruitment. Chronic inflammation is a disease — the immune system develops an inappropriate response and begins attacking healthy cells. Dr. Andrew Weil has stated that chronic inflammation may be "the root of all degenerative disease" and "the cause of the two greatest killers in America: cancer and heart disease." Examples of chronic inflammatory diseases include arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, tendonitis, bursitis, gouty arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, systemic lupus erythematosus, osteoarthritis, celiac disease, vasculitis, bronchiolitis, irritable bowel disease, atherosclerosis, psoriasis, myocarditis, nephritis, colitis, iritis, hay fever, and many more.

TCM differentiation: Acute inflammation from trauma = qi and blood stagnation with heat and dampness — qi and blood stagnation causes pain; heat causes redness and hot sensation; dampness causes edema, swelling, pus, sores, abscesses, and boils. Acute inflammation with infection = toxic heat accumulation with damp accumulation. Chronic systemic inflammation = yin-deficient heat or heat in the blood — chronic inflammation taxes the body's resources, yin becomes deficient, and deficiency heat or heat in the blood manifests. Key distinction: heat-clearing, detoxifying herbs treat infections via antibiotic/antiviral effects; heat-clearing herbs with sour taste and astringent/binding property treat inflammation by shrinking inflamed and expanded tissue.

Key herb-level clinical data:

Ce Bai Ye (Cacumen Platycladi / Platycladus / Biota Orientalis): potent anti-inflammatory — suppresses TNF-α, IL-6, and COX-2 expression; inhibits inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in microglial cells; cools blood; stops bleeding associated with acute inflammation; treats various inflammatory conditions associated with infection

Ma Chi Xian (Herba Portulacae / Purslane / Portulaca Oleracea): analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects comparable to diclofenac sodium (Voltaren) — one of the most frequently used NSAIDs in the world; topical paste of Ma Chi Xian + Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas) showed 93% rate of effectiveness in 128 patients to reduce swelling and inflammation from external or trauma injuries within 3–7 days; cools blood; clears deficiency heat in the ying (nutritive) level; heat-clearing and detoxifying; treats various inflammatory conditions associated with infection

He Zi (Fructus Chebulae / Terminalia Chebula / Chebulic Myrobalan): astringent/binding — shrinks inflamed and expanded tissue; prevents drying of yin from heat in chronic inflammation; antihistamine and anti-anaphylactic — water extract significantly inhibits histamine release from mast cells in a dose-dependent manner; effectively prevents and/or treats systemic and local anaphylaxis; anti-inflammatory and disease-modifying for rheumatoid arthritis — significantly inhibits joint swelling by modulating pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in the synovium, reducing serum levels of TNF-α, TNF-R1, IL-6, and IL-1β; chebulagic acid suppresses onset and progression of collagen-induced arthritis; chebulagic acid — potent COX and 5-lipoxygenase dual inhibitor (key enzymes in inflammation and carcinogenesis)

Wu Bei Zi (Galla Chinensis / Chinese Gall / Gallnut): astringent/binding — shrinks inflamed and expanded tissue; prevents drying of yin from heat in chronic inflammation; addresses swelling via sour taste and astringent/binding property

Tian Hua Fen (Radix Trichosanthis / Trichosanthes Root): reduces acute inflammation — clears heat and purges fire; generates body fluids (yin substance essential for tissue growth); marked anti-inflammatory effect for various chronic inflammatory conditions; immunoregulatory — trichosanthin significantly delays allograft rejection and minimizes inflammatory conditions by reducing IL-2 and interferon-gamma and increasing IL-4 and IL-10 in splenic T cells

Bai Wei (Radix et Rhizoma Cynanchi Atrati / Cynanchum Atratum): cools blood; clears deficiency heat in the ying (nutritive) level; heat-clearing and detoxifying; key herb for chronic inflammation

WESTERN THERAPEUTIC ACTIONS

* Anti-inflammatory — Ce Bai Ye (TNF-α↓, IL-6↓, COX-2↓, iNOS↓); Ma Chi Xian (Voltaren-comparable, 93% / 128 patients topical); He Zi (TNF-α↓, TNF-R1↓, IL-6↓, IL-1β↓, synovium modulation); Tian Hua Fen (acute and chronic, trichosanthin immunoregulatory)

* Antihistamine / anti-anaphylactic — He Zi (mast cell histamine inhibition, systemic and local anaphylaxis prevention, dose-dependent)

* COX / LOX inhibition — He Zi chebulagic acid (COX + 5-lipoxygenase dual inhibitor); Ce Bai Ye (COX-2 suppression)

* Antioxidant — fixes free-radical-mediated peroxidation of membrane lipids and oxidative damage of DNA and proteins

* Disease-modifying / antiarthritic — He Zi chebulagic acid (collagen-induced arthritis suppression, onset and progression)
