Overview

Flex (GT) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula traditionally used to help support healthy uric acid balance and joint comfort, particularly between gout flare-ups. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this pattern is traditionally associated with damp-heat and painful obstruction syndrome (bi zheng). Flex (GT) is designed to help strengthen the Spleen and Stomach and drain damp-heat as a complementary traditional support, not a treatment for an acute gout attack.

⚠️ Important: This formula is a complement to, not a substitute for, medical care. See the Safety & Contraindications section below for full precautions before use.

Clinical Applications & Benefits

Flex (GT) is traditionally used to help support:

  • Joint comfort and healthy uric acid balance as a complementary traditional approach
  • Fluid balance and drainage, traditionally associated with damp-heat patterns
  • Overall comfort between gout flare-ups, as part of a broader diet and lifestyle routine

Severe or sudden joint symptoms — including a gout flare — should be evaluated by a physician. This formula is a complementary support for the time between episodes, not a substitute for medical care during a flare.

Key Herbs (TCM Data)

— Huang Bo (Phellodendron): traditionally considered a key herb for uric acid balance.

— Jin Qian Cao (Lysimachia): traditionally used to help support healthy uric acid levels.

— Ze Xie (Alisma) and Che Qian Zi (Plantago): traditionally used as diuretics to drain damp-heat.

— Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena), Shi Gao (Gypsum), and Di Huang (Rehmannia): traditionally used together to clear heat and ease joint swelling.

— Ji Xue Teng (Spatholobus): traditionally used to open the channels and collaterals.

— Chi Shao (Red Peony): traditionally used to activate blood circulation and ease pain.

— Cang Zhu (Atractylodes) and Yi Yi Ren (Job's Tears): traditionally used to strengthen the Spleen and Stomach and resolve dampness.

— He Zi (Chebula) and Wu Bei Zi (Chinese Gall): traditionally used as astringents to ease swelling.

Safety & Contraindications

  1. Do not use in cases of deficiency and cold — this formula clears heat and is not appropriate for cold-type presentations. For cold-type arthritis, consider Flex (CD) instead.
  2. Not designed to treat an acute gout attack — seek medical care for a sudden, severe flare.
  3. Do not use heat packs on a gouty joint.

Dosage & Directions

Standard dosage: 4 capsules three times daily. Begin at the first warning signs. Dosage may be adjusted with practitioner guidance during the first 1–2 days for faster onset, then reduced for long-term maintenance.

Supplementary formulas: For general joint discomfort, this formula is traditionally paired with Herbal ANG. For swelling and inflammation, it is traditionally paired with Astringent Complex. For lower body comfort alongside weight management goals, it is traditionally paired with Herbalite. For joint comfort alongside metabolic fluid balance concerns, it is traditionally paired with Equilibrium.

Holistic Nutrition & Lifestyle

Nutrition: Purine-rich foods such as organ meats, certain seafood, and alcohol are traditionally discouraged, while cherries, blueberries, and strawberries are traditionally encouraged. Adequate hydration with distilled water is traditionally recommended. After a flare, a period of light, plant-based eating is traditionally recommended.

Key principle: Long-term support relies on consistent diet and lifestyle habits, not herbs alone.

Case Studies

The following reflect individual practitioner experiences and traditional use; results vary and are not guarantees of outcome for any individual.

"A woman with joint pain, swelling, and redness in her feet, fingers, and wrists, consistent with a damp-heat and qi and blood stagnation pattern, combined Flex (GT) with a supplementary formula and acupuncture, and reported her joint comfort and range of motion noticeably improved over time."
