Overview

Back Support (HD) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula traditionally used to help support comfort during herniated disc, lumbar radiculopathy, and sciatica, including pain that radiates down the legs with tingling or numbness. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this pattern is traditionally associated with qi and blood stagnation obstructing the lumbar channels. Back Support (HD) is designed to help activate blood circulation, eliminate blood stasis, and strengthen soft tissues as a complementary traditional support alongside your physician's care. This formula is traditionally considered most supportive for injuries that are mild to moderate in severity.

⚠️ Important: Contraindicated during pregnancy and nursing. If pain radiates to the extremities accompanied by sudden loss of bladder or bowel control, seek emergency medical care immediately — this may indicate a serious condition that can lead to permanent disability if not treated promptly. Contains Dan Shen and Dang Gui, which invigorate blood circulation — those on anticoagulant or antiplatelet therapy such as warfarin should use with caution or avoid this formula. Do not take during the acute phase of an injury where there is still active bleeding or severe bruising — use Back Support (AC) instead.

Clinical Applications & Benefits

Back Support (HD) is traditionally used to help support comfort during:

  • Back pain due to a herniated, bulging, or slipped disc
  • Pain radiating from the spine down the legs, with tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness
  • Recovery support alongside physical medicine such as acupuncture, tui-na, or chiropractic care

Anyone with a diagnosed or suspected disc condition should be under the care of a physician, who may recommend imaging, physical therapy, or other treatment alongside herbal support. This formula is a complementary support, not a substitute for that care. In cases of significant nerve involvement, spinal manipulation may not be appropriate — confirm with your practitioner.

Key Herbs (TCM Data)

— Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis): a traditional analgesic herb, traditionally used to help ease pain.

— San Leng (Sparganium) and E Zhu (Zedoary): traditionally regarded as strong pain-relieving herbs that help eliminate blood stasis.

— Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong), and Dan Shen (Salvia): traditionally used to tonify and activate blood circulation.

— Bai Shao (White Peony) and Gan Cao (Licorice Root): traditionally used together to nourish yin and relieve muscle spasms and cramps.

— Ze Xie (Alisma), Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed), and Yi Yi Ren (Job's Tears): traditionally used to drain water accumulation and help reduce swelling.

— Shen Jin Cao (Lycopodium) and Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig): traditionally used to open the channels and collaterals and help ease radiating pain and numbness.

— Chuan Niu Xi (Cyathula) and Du Zhong (Eucommia Bark): channel-guiding herbs traditionally used to strengthen soft tissues and support the lumbar region.

Safety & Contraindications

  1. Contraindicated during pregnancy and nursing.
  2. If pain radiates to the extremities accompanied by sudden loss of bladder or bowel control, seek emergency medical care immediately — this may indicate a serious condition that can lead to permanent disability if not treated promptly.
  3. Contains Dan Shen and Dang Gui — those on anticoagulant or antiplatelet therapy such as warfarin should use with caution or avoid this formula.
  4. Do not take during the acute phase of an injury where there is still active bleeding or severe bruising — use Back Support (AC) instead.
  5. Anyone with a diagnosed or suspected disc condition should be under the ongoing care of a physician.

Dosage & Directions

Standard dosage: 3–4 capsules three times daily on an empty stomach with warm water. For severe or acute pain, 6–8 capsules every 4–6 hours as needed, especially in the early stages. Once pain subsides, reduce back to standard dosage.

Clinical notes: Taking this formula roughly 30 minutes before an acupuncture or tui-na treatment is traditionally recommended. Cold packs are traditionally used during the first 24–48 hours of an acute injury, followed by heat packs to support circulation.

Supplementary formulas: For severe lower back channel tension, this formula is traditionally paired with Back Support (AC) and Herbal ANG. For traumatic injuries, it is traditionally paired with Flex (TMX). For structural skeletal support, it is traditionally paired with Osteo 8. After the acute phase resolves, transitioning to Back Support (CR) is traditionally recommended for long-term support.

Holistic Nutrition & Lifestyle

Nutrition: Whole grains, vegetables, and fruits are traditionally encouraged for bone, nerve, and muscle support. Fresh pineapple is traditionally encouraged for its natural bromelain content. Foods high in potassium, such as bananas and oranges, are traditionally encouraged to help ease cramps. Cold beverages, caffeine, sugar, and dairy are traditionally reduced.

Lifestyle: Gentle stretching and strengthening exercises for the back are traditionally recommended for long-term recovery. Mild regular exercise, such as swimming, yoga, or tai chi, is traditionally encouraged. Proper lifting technique using the legs rather than the back, and avoiding twisting motions, is traditionally recommended to reduce re-injury risk. Adequate rest on a supportive, firm mattress is traditionally recommended.

Case Studies

The following reflect individual practitioner experiences and traditional use; results vary and are not guarantees of outcome for any individual. All patients remained under appropriate medical or practitioner supervision.

"An older man with radiating hip and leg channel tightness and lower back spasms, consistent with Liver and Kidney yin deficiency with qi and blood stagnation, took Back Support (HD) and reported improvement in comfort after a couple of weeks."
"A woman with significant low back pain following a sudden physical overexertion injury, consistent with qi and blood stagnation, combined Back Support (HD) with a supplementary formula under her physician's ongoing care and reported the most relief from Back Support (HD)."
