Overview
Back Support (CR) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula traditionally used to help ease longstanding back discomfort, weakness, and stiffness, including dull achy pain and slow recovery from earlier injuries. Based on the classical formula Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang, it's traditionally associated with Liver and Kidney deficiency patterns, and is formulated to help disperse painful obstruction, invigorate qi and blood circulation, and support the body's natural strengthening of bones, sinews, and muscles over time.
⚠️ This is a warming formula — blood pressure should be monitored while taking it, as use may be associated with a slight increase. Not intended for the acute phase of an injury where there is still bleeding, inflammation, or bruising; use Back Support (AC) instead. Seek immediate medical care if fever accompanies one-sided back pain, or if pain radiates to the extremities with sudden loss of bladder or bowel control.
Clinical Applications & Benefits
Back Support (CR) is traditionally used to help support:
- Comfort during longstanding, dull, or achy back discomfort
- Weakness and soreness of the lower back and knees
- Comfortable range of motion and flexibility over time
- Recovery support when healing from a back injury has been slow
People managing longstanding back discomfort, stiffness, or slow recovery from an earlier injury traditionally turn to formulas like this one, alongside Back Support (AC) for acute flare-ups, to help support long-term comfort and healthy structure.
Key Herbs (TCM Data)
— Du Huo (Angelica Pubescens Root): traditionally used to help disperse wind, cold, and dampness from the back and lower body; traditionally regarded as calming and comfort-supporting.
— Du Zhong (Eucommia Bark) and Sang Ji Sheng (Taxillus): traditionally used to replenish Liver and Kidney and help strengthen bones, sinews, and muscles of the lower back and knees.
— Qian Nian Jian (Homalomena Rhizome): traditionally used alongside Du Zhong and Sang Ji Sheng to support the lower back and knees.
— Di Huang (Rehmannia Root): traditionally used to replenish Liver and Kidney and support the body's natural inflammatory balance.
— Bai Shao (White Peony Root) and Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-Fried Licorice Root): traditionally used together to nourish and relax the tendons and muscles of the back.
— Mu Gua (Chinese Quince Fruit), Wei Ling Xian (Clematis Root), and Ji Xue Teng (Spatholobus Stem): traditionally used to support healthy qi and blood circulation and help relax muscles and tendons.
— Chuan Niu Xi (Cyathula Root): a traditional channel-guiding herb used to direct the formula's effects to the lumbar region.

Dosage & Directions
Standard dosage: 3–4 capsules three times daily on an empty stomach with warm water. Maintenance: 2 capsules daily to support ongoing strength and help guard against re-injury, especially for those with physically repetitive routines.
Supplementary formulas: For knee weakness or soreness, this formula is traditionally paired with Knee & Ankle (CR). For weakened soft tissue, it is traditionally paired with Flex (MLT). For bone density support, it is traditionally paired with Osteo 8.
Holistic Nutrition & Lifestyle
Nutrition: A varied diet of raw vegetables, fruits, and whole grains is traditionally recommended to help support healthy bones, nerves, and muscles. Adequate calcium is traditionally recommended for connective tissue. Fresh pineapple, potassium-rich foods like bananas and oranges, and adequate water are traditionally encouraged. Reducing red meat, seafood, cold beverages, caffeine, sugar, and dairy is also traditionally recommended.
Lifestyle: Using the legs rather than the back when lifting, regular gentle stretching, and mild exercise such as swimming, yoga, or tai chi are traditionally recommended. Maintaining good posture while sitting, taking regular breaks, and supporting healthy weight are also traditionally encouraged. Warmth — through massage, hot packs, or a warm bath with Ai Ye (mugwort) or Epsom salt for 15–30 minutes — is traditionally used to help relax muscles and support healthy circulation. Keeping the back covered and protected from wind, using a firm mattress, and prioritizing rest are also traditionally recommended.
Case Studies
The following reflect individual practitioner experiences and traditional use; results vary and are not guarantees of outcome for any individual.
"G.P., a 57-year-old woman, experienced longstanding low back discomfort with limited flexibility, consistent with a Kidney deficiency pattern. After a course of Back Support (CR), she reported improved mobility and confidence, and was able to walk and stand for longer periods."
"B.F., a 35-year-old man, experienced mid-back discomfort tied to exhaustion and stress, consistent with a Kidney yang deficiency and Spleen qi deficiency pattern. After six weeks combining Back Support (CR) with acupuncture, warmth, and core strengthening, his discomfort eased considerably."
"A 56-year-old woman experienced significant back and joint stiffness with difficulty walking, consistent with a cold-damp stagnation pattern with underlying Kidney deficiency. After combining Back Support (CR) with acupuncture, she reported walking and standing with far greater ease and returning to a more active daily routine."
