Overview

Knee & Ankle (CR) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula traditionally used to help support comfort and mobility during the chronic or rehabilitation phase of knee and ankle discomfort, including longstanding stiffness, weakness, and reduced range of motion. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this pattern is traditionally described as painful obstruction from qi and blood stagnation with underlying deficiency. This traditional framework is not a medical diagnosis, and joint issues that are worsening, unstable, or accompanied by significant swelling should be evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional.

⚠️ Do NOT use alone during the acute phase of an injury — if there is still active bleeding, inflammation, or bruising, use Knee & Ankle (AC), Flex (TMX), or Herbal ANG instead. This formula is not intended as a standalone approach for diagnosed inflammatory joint conditions; work with a qualified healthcare professional to determine the right approach for your specific condition.

Clinical Applications & Benefits

Knee & Ankle (CR) is traditionally used to help support:

  • Comfort and mobility during longstanding knee and ankle stiffness and weakness
  • Recovery support following the acute phase of an injury, once bleeding and swelling have resolved
  • General joint comfort during the rehabilitation and strengthening phase

For acute injuries, start with Knee & Ankle (AC); this formula is traditionally used once the acute phase has passed, often paired with Flex (MLT) for continued recovery.

Key Herbs (TCM Data)

— Chuan Niu Xi (Cyathula Root): traditionally used to invigorate circulation and direct the formula to the lower body.

— Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis): traditionally used to nourish and invigorate blood; use with caution alongside anticoagulant medications.

— Du Zhong (Eucommia Bark) and Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia): traditionally used to support bone and joint health and nourish the Kidney.

— Dang Shen (Codonopsis): traditionally used to tonify qi and support overall vitality.

— Wu Jia Pi (Acanthopanax Bark): traditionally used to ease discomfort and dispel wind-damp.

— Bai Shao (White Peony Root) and Gan Cao (Licorice Root): traditionally used together to ease muscle spasms, cramps, and stiffness.

— Ji Xue Teng (Spatholobus Stem): traditionally used to invigorate blood and support flexibility.

Safety & Contraindications

  1. Do not use alone during the acute phase of an injury with active bleeding, inflammation, or bruising; use Knee & Ankle (AC), Flex (TMX), or Herbal ANG instead.
  2. Not intended as a standalone approach for severe, chronic, or diagnosed inflammatory joint concerns; work with a qualified healthcare professional on the right approach.
  3. Contains Dan Shen and Dang Gui; use with caution or avoid entirely if you take anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications such as warfarin.
  4. Joint issues that are worsening, unstable, or accompanied by significant swelling should be evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional.

Dosage & Directions

Standard dosage: 3–4 capsules three times daily on an empty stomach with warm water; for flare-ups, some practitioners increase to 8 capsules three times daily for 3–4 days. Do not use during the acute phase of an injury with active bleeding, inflammation, or bruising.

Supplementary formulas: For acute injury with significant pain, this formula is traditionally paired with Knee & Ankle (AC) or Herbal ANG. For ligament or soft tissue support, it is traditionally paired with Flex (MLT). For bone density support, it is traditionally paired with Osteo 8.

Holistic Nutrition & Lifestyle

Nutrition: Glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, and adequate vitamins and minerals are traditionally recommended to support bone, tendon, ligament, and cartilage health.

Lifestyle: Gentle daily movement, avoiding high-impact or high-risk activities, and low-impact exercise such as tai chi or walking are traditionally recommended to support recovery and prevent muscle atrophy. Strengthening exercises are also traditionally encouraged to support the joint's long-term stability.

Case Studies

The following reflect individual practitioner experiences and traditional use; results vary and are not guarantees of outcome for any individual.

"K.L., a 42-year-old man, experienced significant hip and leg discomfort with impaired mobility over several months, consistent with a painful obstruction pattern with blood deficiency and stagnation. After combining Flex (MLT) and Knee & Ankle (CR) with acupuncture over about two months, he reported steadily regaining mobility and comfort."
"L.K., a 58-year-old woman, experienced left knee discomfort with limited range of motion, consistent with a qi and blood stagnation pattern with Liver and Kidney yin deficiency. After combining Knee & Ankle (CR) with Herbal ANG and acupuncture, she reported greater range of motion and reduced discomfort."
"A.S., a 45-year-old woman, experienced an ankle sprain with swelling and discoloration. After using Flex (TMX) and Knee & Ankle (AC) initially, she transitioned to Knee & Ankle (CR) for continued recovery and reported steady improvement over the following weeks."
