Consult your physician if you have frequent diarrhea or are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition. This formula is ineffective if taken only for a short period — take persistently for 6–12 months for optimal effect.

Background: Chronic poisoning is usually associated with long-term exposure to and accumulation of toxic substances — chemicals, herbicides and pesticides, allergens, heavy metals, drugs, and other industrial pollutants and contaminants. It is difficult to identify because these substances are ubiquitous in developed countries, and the cause-and-effect relationship is hard to establish as toxicity develops with long-term accumulation rather than one-time contact. Detailed investigation into the personal life and medical history of the patient is absolutely necessary. Patients may exhibit symptoms of heat sensation, low-grade or high fever, thirst, dry mouth, headache, nasal congestion, allergy, irritability, nausea, vomiting, turbid urination, or disorientation. Since the liver and kidneys are primarily responsible for metabolizing and eliminating foreign substances, optimal treatment must address both detoxification of the offending agent and healing of these two organs.

Key herb-level clinical data:

DOSAGE

Standard: 3–4 capsules three times daily with a large glass of water for 6–12 months for optimal effect. Do not use to treat acute poisoning.

Supplementary formulas: Liver damage or hepatitis from poisoning — add Liver DTX. Kidney damage or nephritis from poisoning — add Kidney DTX. Colon detox — add GI DTX. Heat and excess conditions — add Gardenia Complex. Headaches — add Corydalin (AC) or Corydalin (CR). Toxicity manifesting as skin allergies, rashes, or unexplained itching — choose from Silerex, Dermatrol (Damp), or Dermatrol (Dry). Mild nasal congestion and post-nasal drip — add Magnolia Clear Sinus. Severe nasal obstruction with yellow sticky discharge — add Pueraria Clear Sinus. Difficulty breathing or chest tightness — add Respitrol (Heat) or Respitrol (Deficient). Excess perspiration or fatigue — add Immune+. Diarrhea with weakness — add GI Tonic or GI Care II. Difficult cases — add Zhu Dan (Fel Porcus) and Tu Fu Ling (Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae) up to 6g/day. Unknown causes or strange symptoms of blood stagnation — add Circulation (SJ).

Nutrition: Organic products are highly recommended. Take Lactobacillus acidophilus supplement to restore normal balance of intestinal flora. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help flush out toxins. Avoid preserved foods such as ham, canned food, and peanut butter.

Tao of Nutrition (Dr. Maoshing Ni and Cathy McNease):

— Lead and copper poisoning: consume daily 1 pound of fresh water chestnuts with 1/4 pound of peach kernels.

— Allergic reaction to sulfites: drink daily 3 cups of broth made from boiling equal portions of lima and mung beans.

Lifestyle: Avoid exposure to offending toxins as much as possible. Do not drink tap water if it contains high levels of heavy metals. Avoid foods containing preservatives, artificial hormones, herbicides, and pesticides. Minimize outdoor activities when air quality is poor to avoid inhalation of air pollutants. Avoid all products with artificial scents and flavor. Individuals with hypersensitivity should avoid use and inhalation of certain chemicals such as hair spray and perfumes. Consider the work environment as a potential source of chronic poisoning — occupational exposure is a common cause. Taking deep breaths for 10 minutes each day can enhance the elimination of toxins from the body.

First aid for acute poisoning (while awaiting emergency care):

— Inhaled poison: open doors and windows; get the person fresh air immediately.

— Poison on skin: remove contaminated clothing; flood skin with water for at least 10 minutes.

— Poison in eye: flood affected eye(s) with lukewarm water poured from a glass 2–3 inches away; repeat for 15 minutes.

— Swallowed poison: give a glass of water (2–8 oz) immediately unless the person is unconscious, having convulsions, or cannot swallow. Contact the National Poison Control System at (800) 222-1222.

CASE STUDIES

— 30-year-old male (C.F.): Shortness of breath and asthma attacks while drinking, smoking, and painting an outside fence; red face, swollen red tongue with cracks, dry red coating; toxic heat from toxic chemicals; Western diagnosis: acute asthma attack. Herbal DTX prescribed. Result after 2 weeks: shortness of breath improved; patient continued taking herbs.

— 23-year-old male (W.G.): Toxicity from recreational drugs; toxic heat in the Liver and throughout the entire body. Liver DTX + Herbal DTX prescribed.
