Overview

Herbal ANG is a traditional Chinese herbal formula traditionally used as a general-purpose support for acute or chronic pain, including dull, sharp, stabbing, burning, or radiating discomfort of the muscles, joints, and organs. It can be traditionally used on its own or as a complementary addition alongside another condition-specific formula. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, pain is traditionally associated with qi and blood stagnation, and Herbal ANG is designed to help invigorate circulation and disperse this stagnation.

⚠️ Important: Discontinue one week prior to surgery. Contraindicated during pregnancy and nursing. Designed for short-term symptomatic support only, not long-term use — for chronic or ongoing pain, work with a healthcare provider to identify and address the underlying cause. Contains Dang Gui, which invigorates blood circulation — those on anticoagulant or antiplatelet therapy such as warfarin should use with caution or avoid this formula. If pain is located in the chest or abdomen, seek a proper medical evaluation before use, as this formula may mask symptoms of an underlying condition requiring diagnosis and treatment. For pain related to cancer, please work with your oncology team on an appropriate pain management plan; this formula may be considered only as a complementary support alongside that care, never as a replacement for it.

Clinical Applications & Benefits

Herbal ANG is traditionally used to help support comfort during:

  • Acute or chronic pain of varying character — dull, sharp, stabbing, numbing, burning, fixed, or radiating
  • Pain of the skeletal muscles, smooth muscles, and soft tissues
  • General discomfort as a complementary addition to another condition-specific formula

Pain is one of the most common reasons people seek support, and can significantly affect quality of life and daily functioning when it becomes chronic. Proper long-term care requires working with a qualified healthcare provider to evaluate the underlying cause.

Key Herbs (TCM Data)

— Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis Rhizome): traditionally regarded as one of the most potent herbs in the Chinese herbal pharmacopoeia for supporting comfort; traditionally used to invigorate blood circulation, regulate qi, and help ease pain in the chest, abdomen, and limbs.

— Ru Xiang (Frankincense) and Mo Yao (Myrrh): traditionally used together as a synergistic pair to help ease temporary localized tightness and support natural recovery following intense physical overexertion or structural strain.

— Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis): traditionally used to tonify and move blood, and to help support comfort during menstrual pain, headache, and general pain.

— Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga): a traditional channel-guiding herb used to help direct the formula's effects toward the extremities and enhance its overall effect.

Safety & Contraindications

  1. Discontinue one week prior to surgery.
  2. Contraindicated during pregnancy and nursing.
  3. Designed for short-term symptomatic support only; not recommended for long-term use. For ongoing or chronic pain, work with a healthcare provider to identify and treat the underlying cause.
  4. Contains Dang Gui — those on anticoagulant or antiplatelet therapy such as warfarin should use with caution or avoid this formula.
  5. If pain is located in the chest or abdomen, seek proper medical evaluation before use, as this formula may relieve pain without addressing an underlying condition.
  6. For pain related to cancer, work with your oncology team on an appropriate pain management plan; use this formula only as a complementary support alongside that care.

Dosage & Directions

Alone: 3–4 capsules three times daily as needed. For more intense pain, 7–8 capsules every 4–6 hours as needed. As an adjunct with another formula: 2–3 capsules in addition to the regular dose of the base formula. Take on an empty stomach with two tall glasses of warm water. Discontinue when desired comfort is achieved. This formula is traditionally regarded as beginning to take effect within about 30 minutes, and is traditionally used alongside acupuncture for a complementary effect.

Clinical notes: Herbal ANG is traditionally used for both internal and external injuries associated with qi and blood stagnation.

Supplementary formulas: This formula is traditionally used as an add-on alongside a wide range of condition-specific formulas — for example, Corydalin (AC) or Corydalin (CR) for headache, Back Support (AC) or Back Support (CR) for lower back discomfort, and Flex (TMX) for trauma or external injuries. Browse the Symptom & Formula Finder to find the most relevant complementary formula for your specific concern.

Holistic Nutrition & Lifestyle

Nutrition: For pain with cold characteristics, cold or raw foods and cold beverages are traditionally reduced, while warming foods such as lamb, pepper, onions, and scallions are traditionally encouraged. For pain with heat characteristics, spicy foods are traditionally reduced while cooling foods such as watermelon and cucumber are traditionally encouraged. For pain with damp characteristics, greasy, fatty, or fried foods and dairy are traditionally reduced. Adequate calcium and magnesium are traditionally encouraged to help calm the nerves.

Lifestyle: Regular movement and exercise are traditionally encouraged to help keep qi and blood circulating properly and help prevent recurring discomfort, particularly for pain related to repetitive movement or occupational strain. Massage, relaxation techniques, deep breathing, and heat or cold therapy are traditionally encouraged as complementary supports.
