Overview

Gastrodia Complex is a traditional Chinese herbal formula traditionally used to help ease dizziness, vertigo, blurred vision, headache, and generalized weakness associated with elevated blood pressure. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this pattern is traditionally described as Liver yang rising against a background of Liver and Kidney yin deficiency. This traditional framework is not a medical diagnosis. Blood pressure is a medical measurement that requires proper diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment by a qualified healthcare professional.

⚠️ Important: This formula is a complement to, not a substitute for, medical care. See the Safety & Contraindications section below for full precautions before use.

Clinical Applications & Benefits

Gastrodia Complex is traditionally used to help support:

  • Comfort during dizziness, vertigo, and blurred vision associated with elevated blood pressure
  • Headache comfort tied to Liver yang rising patterns
  • General energy and weakness alongside blood pressure management
  • Overall Liver and Kidney yin balance as a complement to cardiovascular wellness

This formula is traditionally used alongside — never in place of — ongoing medical monitoring and treatment of blood pressure.

Key Herbs (TCM Data)

— Tian Ma (Gastrodia Rhizome) and Gou Teng (Uncaria): the two chief herbs, traditionally used to extinguish Liver wind and calm Liver yang.

— Ge Gen (Kudzu Root): traditionally used to ease neck and occipital stiffness and tension.

— Xia Ku Cao (Self-Heal Spike) and Jue Ming Zi (Cassia Seed): traditionally used to help clear Liver heat and support eye comfort.

— Dan Shen (Salvia Root): traditionally used to support healthy circulation and microcirculation; use with caution alongside anticoagulant medications.

— Sha Yuan Zi (Flattened Milkvetch Seed) and Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry): traditionally used to support healthy vision and ease visual discomfort.

— Shan Zhu Yu (Cornus Fruit) and Di Huang (Rehmannia): traditionally used to nourish Liver and Kidney yin.

— Zhen Zhu Mu (Mother-of-Pearl Shell) and Shi Jue Ming (Abalone Shell): traditionally used to anchor Liver yang and extinguish wind.

— Chuan Niu Xi (Cyathula Root): a traditional descending herb used to help direct the formula's effects downward.

Safety & Contraindications

  1. Not effective for malignant hypertension or certain forms of secondary hypertension (such as renal stenosis or pheochromocytoma); these require physician evaluation and may need surgical intervention.
  2. This formula is not suitable for treating the acute onset of seizure, epilepsy, or convulsion.
  3. Contains Dan Shen; use with caution or avoid alongside warfarin (Coumadin) or other anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications due to increased bleeding risk.
  4. Some people may experience mild stomach discomfort; reduce the dosage or take with food if this occurs.
  5. Blood pressure should be monitored regularly by a healthcare professional, with dosage and treatment adjusted based on individual response.
  6. Diagnosed hypertension always requires ongoing medical care; this formula is a complement to, not a substitute for, that care.

Dosage & Directions

Standard dosage: 3–4 capsules three times daily with warm water on an empty stomach. Monitor blood pressure regularly and adjust with guidance from a healthcare professional.

Supplementary formulas: For elevated cholesterol and triglycerides, this formula is traditionally paired with Cholisma. For headache, it is traditionally paired with Corydalin (AC) for acute presentations or Corydalin (CR) for chronic ones. For visual discomfort, it is traditionally paired with Lycium Support.

Holistic Nutrition & Lifestyle

Nutrition: Reducing sodium and processed foods is traditionally recommended, along with foods like celery, spinach, garlic, bananas, sunflower seeds, tofu, mung beans, seaweed, and hawthorn berries. Fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds are also traditionally encouraged. Reducing alcohol, caffeine, and stimulants is recommended, and any dietary changes should be discussed with your healthcare provider given your specific medications and health history.

Lifestyle: Maintaining a positive attitude, managing stress, and identifying personal triggers for tension are traditionally recommended. Reducing or stopping alcohol and tobacco use, along with regular gentle exercise such as swimming, walking, tai chi, or yoga, is traditionally encouraged to support overall cardiovascular wellness.

Case Studies

The following reflect individual practitioner experiences and traditional use; results vary and are not guarantees of outcome for any individual. All cases involved ongoing medical monitoring of blood pressure.

"M.M., a 53-year-old woman, experienced elevated blood pressure alongside disrupted sleep, consistent with a Liver and Kidney yin deficiency pattern with Liver yang rising. After two months on Gastrodia Complex, she reported sleeping better and having more energy, alongside her physician-monitored blood pressure improving."
"A 29-year-old man experienced longstanding headaches, lower back discomfort, dry eyes, and neck tension, consistent with a Liver and Kidney yin deficiency pattern with Liver yang rising. After a course of Gastrodia Complex, he reported his headache comfort improved for roughly a month at a time."
"S.O., a 51-year-old woman, experienced frequent severe headaches for several years, consistent with a Liver yang rising pattern with underlying yin deficiency. After several weeks on Gastrodia Complex, she reported her headaches became noticeably less intense, and over the following months they became infrequent."
