Gardenia Complex – TCM Herbal Formula for Excess Heat, Infection, Inflammation, Fever, Hypertension & Hepatitis
Gardenia Complex™
TCM herbal formula for excess conditions characterized by heat, fire, and toxins — infections with fever; inflammatory conditions with swelling, burning sensations, and pain; hypertension; hepatitis; jaundice; acid reflux; hyperactivity of organ systems — antibiotic; anti-inflammatory; analgesic; antihypertensive; hepatoprotective; cholagogic; antipyretic; gastrointestinal; clears heat; purges fire; eliminates toxins; nourishes yin and tonifies blood
⚠️ Contraindicated in patients with generalized weakness and deficiency. Contraindicated during pregnancy and nursing. Do not take for more than 2 months continuously. Contains Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) — patients on anticoagulant or antiplatelet therapies such as Coumadin (warfarin) should use with caution or not at all. Clinical distinction: Gardenia Complex purges heat in the organs due to internal imbalances or improper diet/lifestyle (excessive spicy or greasy food, lack of sleep, excessive smoking). Herbal ABX clears heat and detoxifies from external sources (influenza, UTI). Although both formulas clear heat, their use should be distinguished.
CLINICAL APPLICATIONS
* Excess conditions with heat and fire in all three jiaos
* Infectious diseases with fever
* Inflammatory conditions with swelling, inflammation, burning sensations, and pain
* Disorders with high blood pressure and fast heart rate
Background: From TCM perspectives, "excess" represents conditions with presentations of heat, fire, and toxins in various zang fu organs. From Western perspectives, these conditions are characterized by infection, inflammation, increased metabolic rate, and hyperactivity of various organ systems. These concepts integrate directly: "Lung heat" = infection and inflammation of the upper respiratory tract; "Stomach heat" = gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, or acid reflux; "damp-heat in the intestines" = inflammatory bowel disorders; "damp-heat in the Liver and Gallbladder" = hepatitis or jaundice; "heat in the channels and collaterals" = inflammatory and arthritic conditions. Herbs that clear heat, purge fire, and eliminate toxins correspondingly have antibacterial, antiviral, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory effects.
Objective diagnosis — Blood Pressure and Heart Rate (Dr. Jimmy Wei-Yen Chang, author of Pulsynergy): Excess heat can be defined by objective findings of fast heart rate and high blood pressure. When subjective complaints are confusing or contradictory, measure blood pressure and heart rate to determine the true pattern:
— Type 1: Systolic (High) + Diastolic (High) + Heart Rate (Fast) = Excess Heat. Use heat-clearing herbs. Note: even if the patient complains of tiredness or fatigue, tonic herbs should never be used when both blood pressure and heart rate are elevated — the diagnosis is excess fire.
— Type 2: Systolic (Low) + Diastolic (Low) + Heart Rate (Slow) = Yang Deficiency. Use tonic herbs. Never give purging or sedating herbs.
— Type 3: Systolic (High) + Diastolic (Normal) + Heart Rate (Slow) = Deficiency Heat + Blood Stasis. Use blood-moving and stasis-resolving herbs combined with deficiency heat-clearing herbs.
— Type 4: Systolic (Low) + Diastolic (Low) + Heart Rate (Fast) = Yin Deficiency Heat. Use herbs that tonify yin and sedate deficiency heat.
Always combine with tongue and pulse diagnosis for accurate conclusions.
