Overview

Balance (Heat) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula traditionally used to help ease menopause discomfort with heat signs — hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, and mood swings. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this pattern is traditionally associated with Kidney yin deficiency with deficiency heat, alongside Liver qi stagnation. Balance (Heat) is designed to help clear deficiency heat and nourish yin as a complementary traditional support during the menopause transition.

⚠️ Important: This formula is a complement to, not a substitute for, medical care. See the Safety & Contraindications section below for full precautions before use.

Clinical Applications & Benefits

Balance (Heat) is traditionally used to help support comfort during:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Insomnia and restless sleep
  • Mood swings, emotional instability, and irritability

Balance (Heat) vs. Nourish: These are traditionally the two most commonly used formulas for menopause support. Balance (Heat) is traditionally used first to help ease heat-type symptoms such as hot flashes and emotional disturbance. Nourish is traditionally used afterward, once symptoms are more settled, to help nourish yin long-term. Anyone managing menopause symptoms should stay in touch with their physician, especially if considering or currently using hormone therapy.

Key Herbs (TCM Data)

— Gan Cao, Xiao Mai, and Da Zao (Gan Mai Da Zao Tang): the three principal herbs of this classic combination, traditionally used to nourish Heart blood and calm the shen (spirit).

— Chai Hu (Bupleurum): traditionally used to spread stagnant Liver qi and ease nervousness and mood swings.

— Qing Hao (Sweet Wormwood) and Di Gu Pi (Lycium Root Bark): traditionally used to clear deficiency heat and ease hot flashes.

— Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena) and Huang Bo (Phellodendron): traditionally used to clear deficiency heat and support healthy bone density with age.

— Mu Dan Pi (Moutan): traditionally used to clear deficiency heat.

— Bie Jia (Turtle Shell) and Di Huang (Rehmannia): traditionally used to nourish Kidney jing (essence) and yin.

— Fu Xiao Mai (Floating Wheat): traditionally used to ease abnormal perspiration and night sweats.

— Shou Wu Teng (Polygonum Vine) and Bai Shao (White Peony): traditionally used to nourish Heart blood and yin, and calm the Liver.

Safety & Contraindications

  1. Contraindicated in cases of cold and deficiency — this formula is intended for heat-type menopause patterns only. Those with cold signs such as cold extremities, excessive fatigue, or low libido should consider a Kidney yang-tonifying formula instead.
  2. Allergy warning: contains Xiao Mai (wheat) — persons with a wheat allergy should not take this product.
  3. Anyone considering or currently using hormone replacement therapy should discuss any herbal formula with their physician.

Dosage & Directions

Standard dosage: 3–4 capsules three times daily on an empty stomach with warm water. Take the last dose half an hour before bedtime if symptoms are worse at night. For more pronounced symptoms, dosage may gradually be increased with practitioner guidance, then reduced to a maintenance dose once symptoms ease.

Supplementary formulas: For deeper Kidney yin support, this formula is traditionally paired with Nourish. For irritability and mood swings, it is traditionally paired with Calm. For bone density support, it is traditionally paired with Osteo 8. For vaginal dryness, it is traditionally paired with Balance Spring.

Holistic Nutrition & Lifestyle

Nutrition: A diet rich in raw foods, fruits, and vegetables, along with cooling foods such as tofu and seaweed, is traditionally encouraged. Soy products are traditionally included as part of a menopause-supportive diet. Spicy, pungent, and warming foods, along with alcohol, caffeine, and processed meats, are traditionally reduced.

Lifestyle: Managing stress, avoiding cigarette smoke, and reducing alcohol and caffeine intake are traditionally recommended to support comfort during the menopause transition.
