Overview

Calm ZZZ is a traditional Chinese herbal formula traditionally used to help support restful sleep and emotional calm for those with ongoing stress and an underlying deficient constitution. Calm ZZZ is traditionally used to help calm the shen (spirit), regulate Liver qi, and tonify deficiency.

⚠️ Important: This formula is a complement to, not a substitute for, medical care. See the Safety & Contraindications section below for full precautions before use.

Clinical Applications & Benefits

Calm ZZZ is traditionally used to help support:

  • Ongoing stress and temporary emotional restlessness alongside a run-down constitution
  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep when the mind feels overactive
  • A driven, high-pressure temperament without the underlying reserves to match it

Persistent stress places an ongoing burden on the mind and body. In TCM, this is described as shen disturbance — appearing as stress and occasional emotional restlessness during the day, and as temporary evening sleeplessness at night, often alongside an underlying deficiency. This formula is a general wellness support and is not a substitute for medical or psychiatric care.

Key Herbs (TCM Data)

— Chai Hu (Bupleuri) and Xiang Fu (Cyperi): traditionally used to help regulate qi circulation and relieve Liver qi stagnation.

— Gou Teng (Uncaria) and Deng Xin Cao (Rush Pith): traditionally used to help calm Liver yang and clear Heart fire.

— Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena) and Bai Shao (White Peony): traditionally used to help clear deficiency heat and nourish the Heart.

— Suan Zao Ren (Sour Jujube Seed): traditionally used to help calm the Heart and support restful sleep.

— He Huan Hua (Mimosa Flower) and Shou Wu Teng (Polygonum Vine): traditionally used to help calm the shen and relieve stress.

— Fu Shen (Poria): traditionally used to help calm the shen and nourish the Heart.

— Xiao Mai (Wheat), Gan Cao (Licorice), and Da Zao (Jujube): traditionally used together to help calm the shen and support emotional steadiness.

Safety & Contraindications

  1. May cause drowsiness — do not drive or operate heavy machinery while taking this formula.
  2. Avoid alcohol, which may intensify the effect.
  3. Not a sleeping pill — do not take a large amount, as this increases the risk of drowsiness.
  4. Xiao Mai contains wheat — avoid if you have a wheat allergy.
  5. Not a substitute for medical or psychiatric care. Seek help from a physician or mental health professional for persistent or severe symptoms.

Dosage & Directions

Standard: 3–4 capsules three times daily. For sleep support, take an additional dose 30 minutes before bedtime. Considered safe for long-term use.

Supplementary formulas: For mild to moderate stress, this formula is traditionally paired with Calm. For more pronounced stress, it is traditionally paired with Calm (ES). For advanced evening relaxation support, it is traditionally paired with Schisandra ZZZ. For emotional stagnation patterns, it is traditionally paired with Shine or Shine (DS). For general constitutional support, it is traditionally paired with Imperial Tonic.

Holistic Nutrition & Lifestyle

Nutrition: A diet rich in calcium, magnesium, and B vitamins is traditionally encouraged, as these can be depleted by ongoing stress. Fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins are traditionally encouraged. A warm glass of milk with honey before bed is traditionally used for mild sleep support. Caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, and sugar are traditionally reduced, especially in the evening.

Lifestyle: Regular exercise, adequate rest, and a consistent sleep schedule are traditionally encouraged to help reduce stress. Meditation, yoga, breathing exercises, tai chi, and qi gong are traditionally recommended. A warm bath or light snack before bedtime may also help.
