Overview

Gentle Lax (Excess) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula traditionally used for short-term relief of severe, acute constipation, especially when accompanied by abdominal distension, discomfort, and signs of excess heat like a red tongue or flushed face. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this pattern is traditionally described as stagnant heat accumulating in the digestive tract. This traditional framework is not a medical diagnosis. This is a strong, short-term formula, not intended for everyday or long-term use.

⚠️ Strong formula — reserve for severe constipation. Stop taking once the desired effect is achieved. Do not use at a large dosage or for prolonged periods, as this may cause diarrhea and dehydration. Contraindicated during pregnancy and nursing.

⚠️ Seek medical attention immediately if you experience signs of intestinal obstruction — surgical intervention may be necessary. If you have hemorrhoids, use only to relieve constipation; if bleeding increases, stop immediately and switch to Notoginseng 9. See a physician if constipation is accompanied by vomiting, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, or a distended, tight abdomen.

California Prop 65 Warning: This product contains Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) and Fan Xie Ye (Folium Sennae). Read and follow directions carefully. Do not use if you have or develop diarrhea, loose stools, or abdominal pain, because these herbs may worsen these conditions and be harmful to your health. Consult your physician if you have frequent diarrhea or if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition.

Clinical Applications & Benefits

Gentle Lax (Excess) is traditionally used to help support:

  • Short-term relief during severe, acute constipation
  • Comfort during abdominal distension and pain related to food stagnation
  • Relief during constipation accompanied by signs of excess heat

For everyday or ongoing constipation, this formula is traditionally paired with the gentler Gentle Lax (Deficient) instead.

Key Herbs (TCM Data)

— Da Huang (Rhubarb Root): traditionally used as a strong herb to clear heat and support bowel movement; see Prop 65 warning above.

— Mang Xiao (Mirabilite): traditionally used alongside Da Huang to support fluid movement in the intestines; take with plenty of water.

— Fan Xie Ye (Senna Leaf): traditionally used to stimulate the large intestine; see Prop 65 warning above.

— Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange) and Hou Po (Magnolia Bark): traditionally used to ease abdominal distension and support healthy movement.

— Bai Shao (White Peony Root): traditionally used to nourish blood and ease abdominal discomfort.

— Tao Ren (Peach Seed): traditionally used to support gentle lubrication and ease of passage.

Safety & Contraindications

  1. Contraindicated during pregnancy and nursing.
  2. Strong, short-term formula only; do not use at large dosage or for prolonged periods, as this may cause diarrhea and dehydration.
  3. Seek medical attention immediately for signs of intestinal obstruction; surgical intervention may be necessary.
  4. If you have hemorrhoids, use only to relieve constipation; stop immediately and switch to Notoginseng 9 if bleeding increases.
  5. See a physician if constipation is accompanied by vomiting, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, or a distended, tight abdomen — these may indicate a more serious cause.
  6. Contains Da Huang and Fan Xie Ye — see California Prop 65 warning above.

Dosage & Directions

Standard dosage: 3–4 capsules three times daily with warm water. For sensitive digestion, take with meals or start at 2 capsules four times daily and adjust as needed. Stop once the desired effect is achieved; not intended for long-term use. If a laxative must be used for a prolonged period, adding a probiotic like acidophilus is traditionally recommended to help replenish healthy intestinal flora.

Supplementary formulas: For everyday or chronic constipation, use Gentle Lax (Deficient) instead. For constipation related to stress, this formula is traditionally paired with Calm. For hemorrhoid discomfort, it is traditionally paired with GI Care (HMR).

Holistic Nutrition & Lifestyle

Nutrition: High-fiber foods like fresh fruits, leafy greens, and whole grains, along with at least 8 glasses of water daily, are traditionally recommended. Prunes and honey with grapefruit are also traditionally encouraged. Reducing fried, fatty, and spicy foods is traditionally recommended.

Lifestyle: Regular exercise, managing stress, and not suppressing the urge to have a bowel movement are traditionally recommended to support healthy digestion. Gently massaging the abdomen in a clockwise direction may also help.

Case Studies

The following reflect individual practitioner experiences and traditional use; results vary and are not guarantees of outcome for any individual.

"A 63-year-old retired man experienced abdominal pain, bloating, and severe constipation for several days, consistent with a pattern of excess heat in the digestive tract. After taking Gentle Lax (Excess), he reported a bowel movement within a day, and continued at a lower dose for a week to maintain regularity."
"A 50-year-old woman experienced significant constipation for several days, consistent with an underlying deficiency with internal heat. After taking Gentle Lax (Excess), she reported a bowel movement the next day, and reduced her dose as her digestion normalized."
